Das Glasblasen bedeutet das Handhaben eines liquiden Mediums, das sich in steter Bewegung befindet. Das geschmolzene Glas wird Schicht für Schicht auf die Pfeife des Glasbläsers aufgetragen, um die gewünschte Menge an Material anzusammeln. Während sich oft auf den dialogischen Akt des Glasblasens selbst konzentriert wird, betrachtet das Projekt Fluidic Formations die Flussfähigkeit und Viskosität des in Schmelze befindlichen Glases und den Schichtungsprozess, in dem das Objekt mit der Zeit anwächst.
Der dafür entwickelte ein technologiegestützte Prozess ähnelt daher dem Vorgang des Schichtens; durch die Verwendung eines flüssigen Porzellanschlicks, dessen Fließverhalten exakt eingestellt ist, erzeugt das konzipierte Setting komplexe Artefakte, indem die flüssige Materie auf einen rotierenden Körper getropft wird. Ähnlich dem schichtweisen Anwachsen des zähflüssigen Glas-Rohlings, wächst die keramische Struktur über einen gewissen Zeitraum in Schichten an – der Zusammenklang von Rotation, Flussfähigkeit und die Beschaffenheiten des Grundkörpers erzeugen die eigensinnige Morphologie der Artefakte.
Das WINT Design Lab, ebenfalls Kooperationspartner des Forschungsprojektes Tacit Dialogues, zeichneten die Rotation der Glasbläserpfeife auf. Die gesammelten Daten sind auch Grundlage um die Rotationsbewegungen in dem konzipierten Tropfprozess und somit die Verteilung und das Verhalten des flüssigen Porzellanschlick zu steuern und anzuregen.
Die entstandenen Objekte sind eine Kristallisation der Verflechtung von materiellen und physischen Kräften, von menschlichen und nicht-menschlichen Vorgängen, und sie reflektieren die gemeinsame Verbindung dieser verschiedenen Akteure.

Glassblowing actually means handling a liquid in motion. The fluid glass is applied onto the glassblower’s pipe layer by layer in order to accumulate the desired amount of material. While many perspectives concentrate on the act of blowing glass we are focussing on the fluidity of the material and the layering process in which the object grows over time.
Therefore a technology-aided process resembles the act of layering; by using fluid ceramics and their flow behaviour the conceived setting generates complex artefacts by dripping the liquid matter onto the body. Similar to the formation of fluid glass the ceramic structure grows in layers of material over a certain period of time bearing their own language and morphology.
As WINT Design Lab traced the rotation of the glassblower’s pipe the collected data was used to write these motions into the dripping process and the material. The created objects are a crystallization of the entanglement of material and physical forces, of human and non-human procedures, and they reflect on the common bond of those different actors.
Tacit Dialogues
Tacit Dialogues ist ein fortlaufendes, multidisziplinäres Forschungsprojekt, das die performativen Qualitäten der Glasbläserkunst mittels digitalbasierter Technologien und deren sinnlich-virtueller Dimensionen erforscht. Das Kollektiv beobachtet das Zusammenwirken von Glasbläser, Material und Werkzeugen und möchte insbesondere das verkörperte, mit dem Akt der Herstellung verbundene Wissen hervorheben.
Unter Verwendung interaktiver und sensorbasierter Tracking-Systeme setzt Tacit Dialogues visuelle, klangliche und räumliche Medien ein, um morphogenetische Prinzipien entstehender Formen zu erforschen und sie durch maschinengestützte Rahmenbedingungen in menschliche Perspektiven einzubetten. Indem dieses traditionelle Handwerk mit Hilfe digitaler Werkzeuge abgebildet wird, reflektiert das Projekt auch die Verflechtung zwischen dem Physischen und dem Virtuellen in seinen vielfältigen Erscheinungsformen und behandelt als gleichwertige Akteure.

Tacit Dialogues
Tacit Dialogues is an ongoing multidisciplinary research project that explores the performative qualities of glassblowing art through sensory and virtual dimensions of digital-based technologies. By observing the dialogue between the glassblower, the material and its tools during the making of an object, the collective aims to highlight the embodied knowledge that accompanies the act of making.
Using interactive and sensor-based tracking systems, Tacit Dialogues employs visual, sonic and spatial media to explore morphogenetic principles of emergent forms and embed them in human perspectives through machine-based frameworks. By mapping this traditional craft using digital tools, the project reflects on the collaboration between the physical and the virtual in their multiple manifestations, treating them as equals in their parallel existence.
